LOS ANGELES — Members of California’s National Guard were seen staging early Sunday at the federal complex in downtown Los Angeles that includes the Metropolitan Detention Center, one of several sites that have seen anti-ICE protests involving hundreds of people in the last two days.
The troops included members of the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, according to a social media post from the Department of Defense that showed dozens of National Guard members with long guns and an armored vehicle.
California Gov. Newsom has condemned the move, which a military legal expert said was escalatory because the state did not request assistance, but notably did not involve the president invoking the Insurrection Act, which would allow service members under federal orders to perform law enforcement duties.
Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan threatened to jail Newsom, L.A. mayor Karen Bass, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and any other local officials who failed to cooperate with ICE. Newsom, after months of playing footsie with the MAGAs, finally grew some spine and told Homan where to go with his threats.

“For the federal government to take over the California National Guard, without the request of the governor, to put down protests is truly chilling. It is using the military domestically to stop dissent. It certainly sends a message about how this administration plans to respond to protests. It is very frightening to see this done.” — LA Times
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)
Newsom sent a clear message to border czar Tom Homan: “Come after me.”
Homan had previously stated that officials obstructing immigration enforcement could face legal consequences, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. In response, Newsom dismissed the threat, saying, "Come after me, arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy."
