The failure of the John Lewis voting rights bill set the stage for a MAGA revival.
A New Mexico county run by Trump loyalists is putting DT's fascist election-undermining schemes to the test.
The failure of Congress to pass the John Lewis voting rights bill back in January has left dark clouds hanging over the horizon for the upcoming mid-term elections and beyond. Republican 2020 election deniers are already taking advantage of the failure in order to sabotage elections, reduce voter turnout and cause chaos in the vote counts.
In Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Nevada, Republican primary voters have chosen candidates who owe their political rise to their echoing Trump’s false claim that he, and not Joe Biden won the election, and who are now competing in elections for governor, secretary of state, and attorney general — offices that will hold significant sway over the administration of the 2024 presidential election in critical swing states.
In several battleground states, Republicans who have said they would not have certified Biden’s 2020 victory are running for governor or secretary of state, positions that oversee elections, and the appointment of Electoral College delegates.
Three MAGA commissioners in rural Otero, New Mexico have refused to certify their election. They claimed that the County’s Dominion voting machines were manipulated by foreign powers. Dominion’s systems have become the target of QAnon conspiracy theorists, Rudy Giuliani, and others in Trump’s inner circle since the 2020 election.
On Wednesday, New Mexico’s Supreme Court ordered the commissioners to do their jobs and certify the election results. But in many states and counties, where the courts have been packed with Republican appointees, that’s not going to happen. And then there’s SCOTUS… Well, you get the picture.
MAGA commissioner Vickie Marquardt laughed Monday at the suggestion that a court might intervene in the election dispute. “And so then what? They’re going to send us to the pokey?”
