It's time again to take it to the streets
This attack on women's reproductive rights can and must be stopped in its tracks
R.I.P. — Today I’m mourning the loss of my friend of more than 50 years and longtime fighter for social justice, Kathy Boudin. Condolences to son Chesa, husband David, friends, and family.
We knew this was coming…
Like most of us, I’m shocked and angered, but not surprised at the news of a leaked draft of what appears to be Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s majority decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision establishing access to abortion as a constitutional right. This Trumpian Supreme Court is doing just what we knew they would, despite the denials of Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh during their confirmation hearings. Senator Susan Collins acts surprised.
And there’s more to come unless we act now.
Democrats, if pushed by an overwhelming show of mass support in the streets, can prevent or reverse this assault on democracy by killing the filibuster and voting to codify (with 50 votes) women’s reproductive rights.
If they act decisively, Democrats will have a strong majority of Americans behind them. A Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted last week finds 54 percent of Americans say the Supreme Court should uphold Roe v. Wade while only 28 percent want it overturned.
