Hitting Left, episode #212 with IL State Senator Robert Peters
Speaking out against war is risky business.
Our daughter’s dog, George Bailey, has been banned from Lumpen Radio’s studio for life. No, he didn’t pee on the floor. Much worse. Susan and I were dog sitting George and planning to take him to Michigan with us after Friday’s show. So, I brought him in the studio where I figured he’d sleep for an hour while we interviewed our guest, Senator Robert Peters. Little did I suspect that he’d snarl at our wonderful new producer, August Abitang or try and devour Senator Peters in one gulp. I guess we should have fed George before the show.
Oh well. My bad.
I thought the post-dog-chews-man interview with Sen. Peters went well. On a morning when the Israelis ended their so-called “humanitarian pause” and began bombing Gaza again, Peters told us about how his becoming Jewish inspired him to confront and actively protest against Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza and speak out at the anti-war rally in Chicago.
Peters responds:
“I was told that by just speaking up it might get people to feel comfortable to speak up themselves. That's a win in itself. And I honestly think that more of us need to realize that. And also while we're doing this, more of us need to allow space for other people to come in.”
